The Appalachian Mountains are a large collection of smaller ranges running along the Atlantic Coast of North America. Primarily located in the US, the Appalachians run through more than 15 states, extending as far south as Alabama and as far north as Maine in the US and Newfoundland in Canada. Named after the Apalachee Native Americans of Florida, the mountains serve as a geological barrier between North America's east coast and the plains of the midwest. They are also home to the Appalachian Trail, a popular hiking destination and the world's longest continuous mountain trail.
This mountain range, that forms part of the southern Appalachian Mountains, is located in North Carolina and Tennessee. Here, and also in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east, hydrocarbons produced by trees and other vegetation, as well as higher humidity in the area, produce a bluish tinge to the sky, even over short distances.
